General Motors (GM) India today said it has temporarily suspended production of its utility vehicle Tavera BS-III and the newly-launched sedan Sail diesel variant as part of a quality control process from early this month.
The company, however, clarified, that it is not for safety-related reasons.
Production of Tavera BS-IV and Sail petrol models are not affected, P Balendran, Vice-President, General Motors India said.
“As part of our manufacturing and quality control processes, we have identified a potential emission performance issue with the Tavera BS-III model and a quality issue with the Sail HB & NB diesel variants,” Balendran said, adding this is a temporary measure.
The US auto major reported a 39.82 per cent increase in sales at 8,500 units in May, while the car industry as a whole saw sales declining by 12.26 per cent, a seventh straight month of falling sales.
The company, however, did not give any timeline for resumption of production and said it is working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.
When asked whether this would eventually lead to a recall of these models, he refused a direct answer, saying, “We will come back to you with an update after thorough investigation in the coming days”.
