Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has launched a new version of its successful sports utility vehicle (SUV) Scorpio, 12 years after the first model was rolled out, intending to take on rising competition in the segment.

The new generation Scorpio, which comes with numerous add-on features, is priced between ₹7.98 lakh and ₹11.46 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

“The Scorpio isn’t broken… It has become the most enduring brand in the country,” Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said, launching the vehicle here in Mumbai.

“This new generation Scorpio will deliver exceptional value while offering accessible technology to our customers across India,” he said. Mahindra said the Scorpio has already established its brand in Chile, South Africa and Peru.

The new Scorpio is powered by mHawk engine (120 PS power and 280 NM torque), new cushion suspension technology and anti-roll technology for better ride and handling.

Scorpio’s turning radius has reduced to 5.4 metres from the earlier 5.7 metres.

For the last three years, M&M has been selling more than 55,000 units a year, said Pravin Shah, Chief Executive Officer (Automotive Division and International Operations). M&M had launched Scorpio in 2002 and has so far sold over 4.5 lakh units.

The new Scorpio, which is available at dealerships from Thursday, is being rolled out in five colours, and with multiple seating configurations (seven, eight and nine). The SUV, which was launched in seven variants also meets European regulatory norms. The company will make the SUV at its Nashik and Haridwar facilities, Shah said, adding the capacities at these plants could be scaled up if required.
