Passenger car sales up 3.1%; bikes jump 11.7% in May

Domestic vehicle sales registered a growth of 13.22 per cent to 16,98,138 units in May this year against 14,99,893 units in the same month a year ago, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Tuesday.

While domestic passenger car sales grew 3.08 per cent to 1,48,577 units last month compared with 1,44,132 units in May 2013, motorcycle sales grew 11.71 per cent to 9,84,469 units in May against 8,81,288 units in the year-ago period.

Total two-wheeler sales during the month grew 16.3 per cent to 14,02,830 units from 12,06,173 units in the same period previous year. Total sales of commercial vehicles were down 15.28 per cent to 46,986 units (55,458 units), SIAM said.

The three-wheeler segment saw sales growth of 12.44 per cent at 40,369 units in May 2014 compared with 35,904 units in the same month last year.
