Tecumseh Products India Ltd, the Indian subsidiary of the US compressor maker, is focussing on unveiling value-added compressors in the AC and refrigerator segments, both for the Indian as well as its overseas markets.

The company, which has two manufacturing facilities, including one in Hyderabad, will be cranking up production of products such as DC-based compressors and rotary compressors that are being mostly imported into India at present.

The Indian subsidiary accounts for nearly 15 per cent of the company's global revenue and about 50 per cent of the revenue from India is exported to China, West Asia and African countries.

Energy saving

“Our DC-based product, which we launched early this year, can save significant energy. We are also working on products that can use solar energy for cooling,” Mr Raghavan Ravi, Managing Director of Tecumseh India, told media persons on the sidelines of a seminar here on Thursday.

It currently sells about 1,000 units of DC-based products, targeting to market 30,000 value-added products in this segment within a two-year period. It will follow up this launch with DC-based products for industrial application and a vaccine cooler.

Food segment

The company, which manufactures three million units annually, is also developing a product that can be used to ripen fruits through cooling instead of using chemicals that will not only make the process faster and but also improve the quality of the fruit.

It has already come out with a product that can be used to ripen bananas by conditioning the room, having introduced it at 12 centres in and around Hyderabad. Plans are now afoot to market the products in other parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. “We will soon come out with products for mangoes and other fruits,” he said.

Rotary compressors

Another area of focus for the company is rotary compressors, 99 per cent of which is being currently imported by India, mostly from China. Although the company had launched the product in India about four years ago, the growth had been slow due to the “China factor”.

“But we are now in the process of ramping up the production capacity of rotary compressors from about 1.50 lakh units to one million units. This product will only be for the Indian market,” Mr Ravi said.
