Torrent Power biggest winner in wind projects auction

Torrent Power Ltd, which participated in the competitive bidding and the e-Reverse Auction process held on Tuesday by Solar Energy Corporation of India, (Tranche – III), has emerged as the biggest winner.

The auction was held for setting up of 2000 MW Inter State Transmission System (ISTS) connected wind power projects. Torrent Power won the highest quantum of 499.80 MW amongst all bidders. It is also the largest capacity ever won by any bidder in the wind auctions conducted so far in the country. The project has a schedule of commissioning within 18 Months from the effective date of the PPA, as specified by SECI, the company said in a statement here.

Torrent forayed into the renewable energy space with an up to 50 MW wind power plant in 2012 and has so far implemented wind and solar power projects aggregating to around 436 MW. Besides these operational projects, nearly 185 MW renewable power projects are under advanced stage of execution.

With this win at SECI–III, the aggregate capacity of operational as well as under construction/under development renewable power projects of Torrent has crossed the 1,100 MW mark and its total operational and under construction/development generation capacity has crossed 4,272 MW.

Torrent Power, the ₹10,244 crore integrated power utility of the Torrent Group, is one of the largest private sector players in the country with presence across all facets of the power value chain, i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of power. The company is also in the business of manufacturing and supply of cables.

Torrent has an operational generation capacity of 3,588 MW, including 2,730 MW of gas-based capacity, 422 MW of coal-based capacity and 436 MW of renewable capacity.

It is a leading distributor of power in the private sector and distributes nearly 14.45 billion units to over 3 million customers in the cities of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat and Dahej SEZ in Gujarat, Bhiwandi in Maharashtra and Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
