US-based Momentive Performance Materials, which makes silicones and advanced materials, has expanded its manufacturing facility in Oragadam, near Chennai. This completes the $20-million investment commitment for India announced by the company in 2007.

The 15-acre facility, set up in 2009, makes silicones, synthetic compounds derived from sand. Silicones are typically heat-resistant and rubber-like and are used as sealants, adhesives and lubricants in a various industries such as automotives, personal care, healthcare, agriculture and home textiles.

Silicones are applied as coating over vehicle headlamps (to prevent scratches) and feeding-bottle nipples. They are also used in the making of terry towels (for texture), shampoos (for shine), deodorants and mobile phone keypads. It also finds application in the construction industry due to its adhesive properties.

The Oragadam plant primarily caters to the Indian market; it also ships to Dubai. Some of its customers are P&G, Cavinkare and Marico. “We are looking at expanding to other parts of West Asia and to Africa,” said Mr V. P. Nalian, Managing Director.

Last year, Momentive set up a research facility in Bangalore employing 150 people.

The company's other silicone plants are in Thailand, Japan, the US and China. Apart from silicones, the $7.4-billion Ohio-headquartered company also manufactures quartz, speciality resins and versatic acids across 117 production facilities globally.

“We are evaluating options to manufacture other products at the Chennai plant,” said Mr Nalian.
