The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has once again sought an increase in kerosene allocation to the State from the Centre.

The Centre had allocated 42,460 kl a month with an increase of just 3,031 kl per month. The increased allocation now was negligible when compared to the drastic reduction effected by the Centre from 52,806 kl in May 2011 to 44,580 kl in June 2011. This was further reduced to 39,429 kl from April 2012. In May, she had requested the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to enhance allocation of kerosene to Tamil Nadu to 65,140 kl from 44,580 kl to per month. This is the actual requirement of the State.

Acute shortage

Ms Jayalalithaa in her letter today to the Prime Minister has once again requested him to enhance the allotment to at least 52,806 KL per month. This is to tide over the acute shortage of kerosene faced by the people of Tamil Nadu.

The sudden drastic reduction of the allotment of kerosene to the State from 52,806 kl for the months of April and May, 2011, to 44,580 kl in June, 2011, caused great hardship, she said in her statement.

“Thus, my Government has been subjected to great hardship with an unreasonable, cumulative reduction of the order of 13,377 kl per month,” said the Chief Minister.

As Tamil Nadu's Public Distribution System kerosene requirement is 65,140 kl per month, “I once again request you to allot at least 52,806 kl per month which was the allotment at the time when my Government assumed power in the State. I hope you will also co-operate with me in mitigating the sufferings of the rural poor and the vulnerable population segment in the State,” she said in the statement.
