GOLDENLEAF

The Southern Tea Competition of the Golden Leaf India Awards has received an overwhelming response for the seventh edition to be held this year.

In all, 175 entries have been received for the 41 categories which have been identified for the competition, Mr C. Shreedharan, Convenor, Organising Committee, said.

The national-level screening is being held at the United Planters Association of Southern India, Coonoor. The award has generated intense competition among all the six growing regions to produce better and better teas, Mr Shreedharan added.

A six-member jury panel — representing major tea packers, exporters and leading brokers — has been chosen to evaluate the tea varieties.

The jury consists of Mr Dipak Shah of Crystal Tea, Mr Harmesh Rangaiah of Madhu Jayanti International, Mr Noor Mohamed of Paramount Tea Marketing, Mr Susheel Marcus of Hindustan Unilever, Mr W. C. Thomas of Forbes, Ewart & Figgis, and Mr Vijay Shankar of J. Thomas and Co.

Screening process

The process of selecting the best teas from various agro-climatic regions is based on a multi-layer screening process, using a scoring system that captures the various quality attributes of tea in an innovative manner.

The evaluation is based on a scoring methodology that assigns scores on a scale of 0 to 10 for the various quality attributes such as dry leaf appearance, infused or spent leaf appearance, liquor attributes such as colour, aroma, briskness and strength.

The format and protocol for the competition was exhaustively detailed so as to ensure total transparency and de-mutualisation. Teas qualifying for the first level of screening will also be screened for pesticide residue parameters and heavy metals.

The final tasting session will be held on February 26 which will also coincide with the National Convention on South Indian Teas, to be jointly organised by the Tea Trade Association and the Tea Board of India.

In the next step towards consolidating the brand of South Indian teas and showcasing the winning teas in the national and global market places, a special auction will be held on an e-auction platform in Coimbatore. This auction would be open to buyers across seven auction centres in the country. The winners of the competition will be announced on February 26 .
