The price of the Nendran banana is expected to remain stable, between Rs 38 and Rs 40 a kg over the next two months, say Tamil Nadu Agricultural University experts.

After analysing the price movement of the variety over the past decade, the Back Office of Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre (AMI &BPC) functioning at the varsity said that the price might not increase significantly during the festival season in January.

“It is hovering around Rs 36-38 a kg in Coimbatore at present. This could go up by Re 1-Rs 2 to Rs 38-40/kg in January and stabilise around that level till end February,” a source at the centre said.

This banana variety is cultivated in Tamil Nadu and quite popular among consumers in Kerala. It is grown mainly in Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchi and Kanyakumari districts.

It is planted during April-May, besides October-November for the harvest to coincide with the Onam festival.

The area under banana in Tamil Nadu is 1.25 lakh hectares and the State tops in productivity at 65.8 tonnes/hectare. The acreage under Nendran is, however, not available.
