‘Cong leader should apologise for 1984 anti-Sikh riots’

The BJP charged on Friday that Congress President Rahul Gandhi has taken the contract of defaming “Indian culture” in a foreign land.

What has agitated the ruling party is a statement by Gandhi in Germany that his thoughts are inspired by Guru Nanak.

The BJP reminded the Congress President of Blue Star operation at the Golden Temple, Amritsar, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and said the Congress has always been playing the politics of dividing the country. “You speak about unity in diversity, but you believe in division,” BJP national secretary RP Singh said.

Lashing out at Rahul Gandhi for invoking Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh guru, during his address in Berlin, saying his party is identified with anti-Sikh riots in 1984, Singh said he should apologise for the “heinous crime” at the Golden Temple. “Gandhi is invoking Guru Nanak Dev merely for vote-bank politics. For him, Sikhs are merely vote bank,” Singh said.

Immature speeches

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said Rahul Gandhi has never shown the politics of maturity. He said all the speeches of Gandhi in foreign lands were full of immaturity and impatience. “Our culture is of considering women as goddesses. But Rahul Gandhi says people of India do not do so. This may be your subjective thinking,” Trivedi said.

Trivedi added that Rahul Gandhi has not understood the culture of the country. “We do not have to learn anything from the Congress on respecting women. They have not done anything to make women equal,” he said.

Divide and rule

He said the Congress is playing the politics of dividing the country based on religions and castes. “They are now trying to defame the country abroad,” he added.
