Tea prices up at Kochi sale bl-premium-article-image

Prices of several tea varieties jumped at Kochi auction with good liquoring and popular marks registering an increase of ₹5 to ₹10.

Some other varieties also appreciated by ₹3 to ₹5 and occasionally more, as the sale progressed in sale no 39. The quantity on offer in CTC dust was 11,19,500 kg and witnessed a strong demand with 95 per cent on offer getting sold.

Auctioneers Forbes and Ewart & Figgis said that vendors such as AVT, Tata Global and Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation were very active along with regional blenders. Though the upcountry buyers lent fair support, exporters operated with improved limits.

However, arrivals in orthodox grades were lower at 7,500 kg and primaries became dearer by ₹5 to ₹10 and sometimes more. Others were dearer by ₹3 to ₹5 and more. Exporters absorbed the bulk quantity sold.

In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good grades fetched ₹100-145, mediums quoted ₹69-115 and plain varieties stood at ₹51-66.

In leaf category, the quantity on offer in orthodox grades was 203,500 kg and the market for best Nilgiri brokens and whole leaf grades were firm to dearer by ₹3 to ₹5.

However, the demand was less in CTC with select best brokens and fannings remained steady around last level. The quantity on offer was 83,318 kg. Exporters and upcountry buyers operated with less strength.

In the dust category, Mayura SFD quoted the best prices of ₹146 followed by Mayura SRD at ₹145. In leaf grades, Chamraj FOP-Sup Green Tea fetched the best prices of ₹331 followed by P’s Woodlands Hyson Green Tea at ₹321.
