Tapioca and Castor Research Station (TCRS) of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Yethapur, Salem has been awarded the ‘Best Castor Centre Award,' for 2011, by Indian Council for Agricultural Research, New Delhi.

The award, carrying a shield, certificate, a citation and Rs 5,000, was presented by Dr K.S. Varaprasad, Project Director, Directorate of Oil Seeds Researech, Hyderabad at the all India Annual Research Workers Group Meet on Castor at Yercaud, recently, a TNAU release said.

A promising high yield castor hybrid YRCH-1 was released and popularised among farmers in 2009 by the Station and resulted in the spread of castor crops to all districts of Tamil Nadu, it said.

Demand for its seed was on the increase and therefore TCRS is producing substantial quantity and supplying to the needy farmers, the release said.
