Even as countries try to reach a consensus on curbing greenhouse gas emissions at the ongoing Paris climate conference, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has pulled up the government noting that it did not follow the target for purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources.

“It was observed that as against the National Action Plan on Climate Change target of eight and nine per cent for the years 2012-13 and 2013-14, the national achievement was only 4.28 and 4.51 per cent, respectively,” it said in the Performance Audit Report on Renewable Energy Sector in India.

The CAG report that was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday also noted that except for Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, none of the 24 sampled states fixed the renewable purchase obligations (RPO) in sync with the norms set under the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
