Free heart surgery for Iraqi children

Narayana Hrudayalaya has said it will conduct heart surgeries free of charge for up to 15 poor Iraqi children who have serious cardiac problems.

It will open a tele-medicine or remote consulting facility in Iraq soon, the healthcare major has said.

Two such surgeries were performed since May and more would follow in August, it said.

Ameer Luai, 8, operated upon in May, has returned home and Marwah Riyadh, 5, who was treated in late June, will leave on Sunday.

The children, aged under ten years, are identified by the management of Iraq's holy shrine of Karbala, along with Mr Aga Sultan, former syndicate member of Bangalore University and Visvesvaraya Technological University.

Formal request

“A delegation from the management of the holy shrine in Karbala met Narayana Hrudayalaya's Founder Chairman, Dr Devi Shetty, in Bangalore, with a formal request to help patients from Iraq. Since then, a large number of patients have been treated at the Narayana Hrudayalaya Health City on an economical package,” the hospital said.

Iraq does not have suitable medical facilities to treat the increasing number of children with heart problems, it said.
