Former President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has suggested formation of a World Space Council to act as an apex body to oversee the space activities of each nation.
All nations should come together and work towards solving global problems like energy crisis, water scarcity, healthcare issues and threats to atmosphere through space technology, he said here yesterday.
“A World Space Council can be set up to act as an apex body to oversee the space activities of each nation,” Dr Kalam suggested.
He was speaking at the inauguration session of the three-day national conference on ‘Space Transportation Systems: Opportunities and Challenges’, organised jointly by Vikaram Sarabhai Space Centre and Indian National Academy of Engineering.
Dr Kalam also stressed the need to find lasting solutions for problems like energy crisis, water scarcity, healthcare issues and threats to atmosphere through space technology.
To solve the imminent energy crisis, he suggested the idea of space-based solar power extraction plants, which can generate very large amount of power. Nano-packs, similar to a set of very small batteries can then transfer the power harnessed by space plants to Earth, he said.
In his address, the ISRO Chairman, Dr K. Radhakrishnan, said India has become a major force to reckon with in the arena of space.
He also outlined the challenges faced by space flight, both by launch vehicles and satellites, due to the hostile environment of space.
