Eastern Railway freight traffic up 13%

The Eastern Railway carried 5.225 million tonnes of freight in April, up by 13 per cent against the same month last year. In April 2011, ER carried 4.6 million tonnes of freight. According to a release, ER also surpassed the Railway Board's target of 5.005 million tonnes. Of the total freight traffic, coal amounted to 3.594 million tonnes. ER's earnings from goods traffic witnessed 37.21 per cent increase to Rs 397.13 crore against Rs. 289.44 crore in April, 2011. ER recorded 28.26 per cent growth in total earnings (freight and passenger traffic) Rs 548.19 crore in April, 2012 against Rs 427.42 crore in the same month last year.
