The Central Government is set to make equity investment in Jaipur Metro, which till now, was funded by the State Government.

Sudhir Krishna, Urban Development Secretary, said this on the sidelines of a conference here on Friday.

“We will take the proposal to Union Cabinet soon, may be next week,” said Krishna, without revealing further details.

Earlier, Krishna spoke about the need to use transit-oriented development to fund mass rapid transit systems. Simply put, this includes devising a mechanism that would ensure that the financial benefits of property development around urban transportation systems, such as Metro, is routed to fund Metro rail.

“We have advised all States that they must go for transit-oriented development planning the moment they go for Metro adoption. With this, they can generate lot of resources and plough back some of these toward the Metro,” he said.
