Indian Coast Guard will base ICGS (Indian Coast Guard Ship) Amartya at New Mangalore.
ICGS Amartya is the eighth in the series of 20 inshore patrol vessels indigenously built by Cochin Shipyard Ltd at Kochi. The 50-metre-long vessel displaces 297 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 35 knots.
A press release said here that the ship will be under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (West), Mumbai. The ship will enhance the capability required for continuous vigil along the Karnataka maritime frontiers.
Equipped with modern weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment, ICGS Amartya makes an ideal platform for undertaking multifarious close-coast missions such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue, and medical evacuation, it said.
The features such as integrated bridge management system, integrated machinery control system, and an integrated gun mount with automated control system are capable of knocking down surface and air targets in all-weather conditions by day and night, the release said.
ICGS Amartya is commanded by Commandant PK Jaiswal. It has a complement of five officers and 34 other ranks.
The ship will be received by PC Parida, Chairman of New Mangalore Port Trust, in New Mangalore on October 19.
