Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone opened the second phase of Dhamra port, which it acquired from Larsen & Toubro Ltd and Tata Steel Ltd in 2014, raising the capacity four-fold to over 100 mt from the existing 25 mt.

Odisha's Dhamra port, a joint venture between Tata Steel and Larsen & Toubro, has handled the record 98,119 tonnes of imported non-coking coal, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the port, Mr Santosh K. Mohapatra.

The cargo was discharged with the help of the port's two mechanised ship unloaders from the vessel, m.v. Alfa Friendship with a parcel load of 1,48,103 tonnes of South African coal for Visa Resources India Ltd, Maithan Ispat Ltd and Kyori Oremin Ltd.

“I do not know if any other Indian port has the record of unloading so much of coal in one day from one vessel”, Mr Mohapatra told

Business Line over phone from Dhamra.

“Also, in keeping with the high discharge rate of the vessel, rake loading too had to be stepped up and right now the port is handling on an average eight to nine rakes a day thanks to the support we're receiving from the Railways”.

Starting regular commercial operation in May last year, Dhamra port has so far handled a total of 82 ships including 12 Capesize vessels, according to a spokesman for the port.
