The Eastern Railway, in order to commemorate the 161st anniversary of introduction of railways in Eastern India, has observed “ER Heritage Celebrations” at the regional Rail Museum in Howrah.

East Indian Railway (EIR) was established in 1845 and the first train chugged out of Howrah on August 15, 1854 covering a distance of 24 miles to Hooghly.

Today the ER has four divisions – Howrah, Sealdah, Asansol and Malda – and serves the states of West Bengal, Bihar and Jharakhand.

Meanwhile, in order to cater to the rush of holiday makers during Puja season, Eastern Railway will run five pairs of Puja Special trains each between Sealdah and Puri and between Asansol and Patna; four pairs of Howrah-Nautanwa-Howrah Janasadharan Puja Specials and five pairs of Howrah-Raxaul-Asansol Weekly Puja Special trains, it said in a release.
