New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has seen consistent growth in the past nine years, according to P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT.

Speaking after hoisting the National Flag at the Independence Day celebrations of NMPT here on Thursday, he said that the port is performing well in all spheres. Due to augmentation of infrastructure at the port, the capacity of cargo handling has been increased.

Two additional berths were added to the port in 2006 and 2011 and one more is under completion. Tender has been floated for another berth, he said. Work on the construction of two warehouses is in progress at the port, he said. In spite of the decline in the handling of iron ore cargo, the port handled a total of 37.04 million tonnes of cargo in 2012-13, he said.

Tamilvanan distributed cash awards to the children of NMPT employees and registered cargo handling workers, who secured highest marks in the 10th and 12th standard examinations, on the occasion.

As part of the celebrations, school books were distributed to the students of Government School at Thokur in Mangalore.

The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of NMPT, along with union leaders and employees, planted the saplings in the port premises on the occasion.
