Rail auto hub commences operations near Chennai

Loading of cars into specially designed wagons commenced at India’s First common user rail auto hub located at Walajabad, 35 km south of Chennai.

Loading of 124 Hyundai cars was done by Glovis India in specially designed wagons to Changsari in North Frontier Railway.

The loading resulted in freight earnings of ₹16.37 lakhs, says a press release from Southern Railways.

All infrastructural facilities have been developed in-house by Railways. This includes custom built ramp to facilitate loading of automobiles into wagons.

The hub was inaugurated on‎ March 1 by Suresh Prabhu, Union Minister of Railways. It is located 12- 40 km away from the major manufacturing facilities of Nissan, Hyundai, Ford and Daimler Chrysler.

With an initial holding capacity of over 300 four-wheelers, this rail hub has road connectivity of 4/6 lanes to the production and consumption centres, the release said.
