The Haryana Government has no data or information about the number of contract workers deployed in Maruti Suzuki’s two plants in the State, Parliament was informed on Thursday.

However, as per information from the Maruti management through the office of the Chief Labour Commissioner, the company engages contractors to carry out “some non-core activities in production operations apart from certain outsourced jobs in other areas,” Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He said the manpower deployed by contractors in production operations was “around 35 per cent of the combined manpower at both plant – Gurgaon and Manesar and 45 per cent for Manesar plant alone.”

Kharge was replying to questions seeking the actual number of contract workers in Maruti Suzuki, whose Manesar unit witnessed violence on July 18, leading to the death of an official.

In reply to another question, Kharge said he had not received any suggestion from l1 central trade unions for entrusting the investigation of the violence to CBI.

Maruti Suzuki falls under the State sphere and the Haryana Government has set up a special investigating team, he added.
