Heavy rains paralyse Mumbai

The heavy downpour over the last two days, battering Mumbai, coastal Konkan and parts of central Maharashtra has thrown Mumbai and the surrounding areas completely out of gear.

Police control room informed that one person was killed in a small landslide near Tardeo, in south Mumbai, while four persons were washed away due to floods in Thane.

Services of suburban Central and Western railways line were severely affected, while Harbour line was completely shut due to flooding on the tracks. Road traffic across the city was very slow due to water logging in low lying areas.

Maharashtra's Additional Chief Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation), Mr J S Saharai, told media person at the State secretariat that Mumbai city has received 1,693 mm of rainfall, while the suburban Mumbai got 1,908 mm of rainfall. Since June 1 the city has received 141 per cent of the average rainfall, while the suburban region was at 146 per cent. The rains of last two days have ensured that all the major lakes supplying water to city are now overflowing, he said.

Across the State, 12 deaths were reported from drowning and house collapse. With the exception of Jayakwadi dam, all other major dams supplying irrigation and drinking water to the State are filled to the brim.

The gates of Koyna dams have been opened and about 2,500 cubic meters of water per second is being released, he said.

Flood gates of all major dams have been opened therefore state administration has asked citizens not venture near the downstream river beds, he said.

According to the rainfall statistics of Maharashtra, of the 33 districts, 16 have received more than 100 per cent of the season's average rainfall, while 18 districts got between 76 to 100 per cent rain. Only Gadchiroli got 75.29 per cent rainfall.

PTI adds: In Nashik, about 7,500 cusecs of water was released from Gangapur Dam after it was filled up to 93 per cent mark following incessant rains, official sources said.

The water level in Darna Dam and other small and medium reservoirs is rising steadily and people residing on the banks have been alerted to move to safer destinations, they said.

Traffic on Mumbai-Agra national highway has been affected following a landslide at Latifwadi last night.
