Jayalalithaa reiterates demand for entire power from Kudankulam

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, reiterated her demand to the Centre to allocate to the State, the entire power to be generated from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.

In a letter to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the Chief Minister said that with the nuclear fuel to be loaded in the next few days, the first unit of 1,000 MW is set to generate power. However, details of the action taken to allocate the entire power to the State is not known, she said.

Ms Jayalalithaa hoped that the Centre will heed the State's request.

In the earlier letter on March 31, Ms Jayalalithaa had urged the Centre to allocate the entire power from the proposed 2,000 MW nuclear power plant in Tirunelveli to the State. Tamil Nadu's share was now 925 MW.

Due to the severe power shortage in the State and constraints in transmission infrastructure which prevent Tamil Nadu from accessing power from elsewhere, it would be ‘proper and justifiable' that all the power is allocated to the State, the Chief Minister had said.

She had pointed out that Tamil Nadu had asked for allocation of 1,000 MW from the Central Pool last year but only 100 MW was made available to Tamil Nadu.
