The Maharashtra unit of the Congress party has decided to launch mass agitation against the Railway fare hike.

As a first step, party members have decided to break the law by travelling ticketless on suburban trains.

Addressing the media, State President of the party, Manikrao Thakre said that on Monday all leaders and party workers will travel without ticket from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) to the Thane station.

Some party workers could even extend their ticketless journey to Kalyan, he added.

“By June 25, if the hike is not rolled back then the agitation would be further escalated by demonstrating at all the Railway stations in the State. Signature campaigns would be launched the help of travellers,” said Thakre.

The Congress leader said the fare hike by the Government is unjust and inflationary and will put tremendous pressure on the common man. The Modi government has forgotten its promise of reducing inflation, he said.

When mediapersons pointed out that even the Manmohan Singh Government had hiked the fares to reduce losses, Thakre said it is the job of the government to reduce losses but it should be done without burdening the common man.
