The Planning Commission on Thursday approved annual Plan outlay of Meghalaya of Rs 3,939 crore for the current fiscal, which is 44.44 per cent higher than that in 2011-12.

The annual Plan for State was finalised here at a meeting between the Commission's Deputy Chairman, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Mr Mukul Sangma.

Commenting on the performance of State, Mr Ahluwalia said Meghalaya has been performing well.

The State was asked to take necessary policy initiatives for further strengthening of the industry sector.

The Chief Minister said as part of its inclusive growth strategy, the State has decided to transfer funds, functions and functionaries of major departments to panchayati raj institutions.

He added that funds have been allocated separately for SC/ST and OBC in every head of plan expenditure.

He further said priorities for the 12th Plan (2012-17) would include accelerated development of infrastructure both physical and social and introduction of policies which will encourage private sector participation in infrastructure development.

Focus would be on education and health sectors so that benefits of development reach all sections of society, the CM said, adding that the fiscal discipline with enhanced focus on revenue generation would continue to be the priority of Meghalaya.
