The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to reorganise the administrative areas at the taluk level to increase the speed of delivery of Government services.
A taluk is a sub-division of a district with the administration headed by a Tahsildar. The 32 districts in Tamil Nadu are sub-divided into 220 taluks.
The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, announced in the Assembly, the taluks would be reorganised to ensure that population in each administrative area does not exceed 4 lakh. A committee with the Commissioners of Revenue and Land Reforms will be constituted to study the reorganisation of the taluks. Based on the 2011 census, over 62 taluks have a high population, she said.
The committee will make its recommendation within two months.
The Revenue Department is responsible for the administrative areas and handles the delivery of Government's services to the people, including development and welfare schemes and relief and rehabilitation during disasters. Sub-division of large administrative areas will help to speed up the delivery of services and enable closer interaction with the people.
Government certificates
All school students will receive their community certificates, family income certificates and nativity certificates in school after they complete the sixth standard. These are essential for them to avail of benefits, accommodation in government-run hostels and for higher studies.
Over 12 lakh students will benefit every year, she said.
New taluks
The Chief Minister announced the creation of nine new taluks.
These are Thirubhuvanam in Sivagangai District; Kalasapakkam in Thiruvannamalai; Alathur in Perambalur; Kinathukadavu and Annur in Coimbatore; Thiruporur in Kanchipuram; Chinna Salem in Villupuram; Andhiyur in Erode; and Kollimalai in Namakkal.
Training centre
The Tamil Nadu Government will establish a disaster management centre to train officials in handling relief and rehabilitation works. The facility will come up in Kanchipuram district at a cost of Rs 10 crore, the Chief Minister said.
