Our Bureau Updated - March 12, 2018 at 09:16 PM.

Due to the prediction of heavy rain fall in Chennai and surrounding areas by the India Meteorological Department , the Public Works Department, will release surplus water, if required, from Red Hills, Chembarambakkam and Poondi reservoirs. However, this depends on the intensity of the rainfall.

The rain is due to the cyclone ‘Thane,' which is likely to hit the coastal area in Tamil Nadu and is likely get heavy rainfall in the next few days.

The release of the water will be calibrated depending on the inflows into the reservoirs and will vary from 250 cusecs to 2000 cusecs.

People living in the surplus course and low-lying areas of these reservoirs are hereby advised to move to safer places, says a State Government press release.

Chembarambakkam in Kanchipuram district, , about 40 km from Chennai, is one of the two rain-fed reservoirs from where water is drawn for supply to Chennai city, the other being the Puzhal Lake.
