Vacancies in Presidency University (formerly known as Presidency College), a premier educational institution in the State, will be filled on a priority basis in three months.

Around 200 teaching posts are lying vacant at the varsity and will be filled up, the West Bengal Higher Education Minister, Mr Bratya Basu, said at Writers' Buildings on Wednesday.

“We held a meeting with the Vice Chancellor of Presidency College and there is an urgent need to recruit teachers for all subjects,” Mr Basu said.

Reiterating the Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee's stand, Mr Basu said politics will never come in the way of functioning of the university.

Recruitment

“We will publish advertisements in the newspapers for the recruitment of teachers. Teachers will be recruited through free and fair processes on the basis of merit and eligibility,” Mr Basu added.

The Presidency will be modelled on Nalanda University and a mentoring committee for the college will be set up.

According to the Minister, work has already begun on filling vacancies in 600 different colleges of the State. Meetings with the College Service Commission will soon be initiated.

The State government has also decided to release the salaries of professors on the first day of every month.
