PAN-CITY INITIATIVES

Plan envisages an ICT-based urban mobility facility based on intelligent traffic management system with traffic sensors on major roads to get real-time data on traffic volumes; the entire city area will also come under electronic surveillance system. It also provides for smart parking meters, solar-powered bus shelters, passenger information systems, and solar LED streetlights. Somewhat uniquely, the city plans to adopt smart paving technology by using tiles that will capture energy from pedestrians’ movement. Another initiative envisages a “crowd mapping” platform for civic engagement, with provision for online voting on projects.

AREA-BASED DEVELOPMENT

Estimated cost ₹809.4 cr

About 75 acres of the Mandakki Bhatti area in the Old City ( pictured right ), where about 1,000 puffed rice factories are located, are to be retrofitted. Polluting furnaces are to be replaced by electrical, environment-friendly machines. Additionally, the plan envisages the economic rejuvenation of the Mandipet market area ( pictured left ), through development of commercial and retail spaces, with solar panels on rooftops, along with multi-level car parking facilities and green open space and a public plaza. An old government hospital is to be upgraded to a 150-bed facility. There are lso plans for a library and a knowledge centre.

FUNDING OPTIONS

The total indicative project cost is about ₹1,307.2 crore. Smart City fund allocations from the Centre and the State governments will bring in ₹971.5 crore; PPP projects will net an additional ₹167.6 crore; convergence with Central and State government schemes will provide ₹124.9 crore. And the Davanagere City Corporation will pitch in ₹43.2 crore
