Trade and industry bodies here have hailed the Tamil Nadu Government's decision on commissioning Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said that the decision to go ahead with the commissioning of the plant is highly laudable.

The Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has handled the sensitive and complicated issue with diligence by having discussions with agitators, forming an Expert Committee to that there is not threat either to the people living in that area or to the fishermen and environment. The allocation of Rs 500 crore for development of the areas around the plant is also praiseworthy.

This decision would significantly give new life to all sections particularly the SSI sector.

Power supply

The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, while hailing the decision of the Government, in a statement, said that the entire power generated from Unit 1 of the project should be allotted to the State.

Further additions, in a few months ahead from Unit 2 should also be allotted to the State to stave off acute power shortage. The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) President, Mr V.S. Manimaran said that Maditssia was the first to organise awareness programme about the feasibility of the project and subsequently a mega blood donation camp in support of opening of the plant.

He also appreciated the sanctioning of Rs 500 crore for development activity of Kudankulam.

The opening of the plant will help the industrial community to get power supply of 1000 MW and help reduce the power crisis in Tamil Nadu, he added.
