Computer maker Hewlett-Packard reported an increase of 1 per cent in sales to $27.6 billion in the third quarter, up from $27.2 billion a year earlier, the Palo Alto, California-based-company said on Wednesday.

Profits slipped 29 per cent to $1 billion compared to $1.4 billion a year ago, the report said.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with the progress we’ve made,” said Meg Whitman, Hewlett-Packard’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.

A 9-per-cent increase in desktop sales and an 18-per-cent increase in Notebook sales helped to boost the overall revenue numbers.

The company was once the world’s largest makers of personal computers, but has been hit hard as PC buyers switch to smartphones and tablets, neither of which HP manufactures.
