Mumbai had the largest number of downloads followed by Delhi, Karnataka

Bharti Airtel's carrier agnostic music streaming music services Wynk has crossed five million downloads since it was launched in September 2014.

The largest number of downloads came from the Mumbai circle followed by Delhi and Karnataka.

About 60 per cent of the total downloads were Bollywood music, while the remaining was equally split between English and vernacular songs.

“The application being carrier agnostic was one of the major reasons for the achieving the milestone.

“Wynk was launched as an attempt to curb piracy, and more importantly to provide access to quality music,” said Srinivasan Gopalan, Director (Consumer Business), Bharti Airtel.

Wynk is a free-to-download application for Android and iOS operating systems.

It was also listed in the ‘Favourite Apps’ section on Google Play Store.

Pop sensation Honey Singh topped the charts as the most popular artiste, followed by American hip-hop artiste Akon and singer Lata Mangeshkar.

The Bollywood movie Roy was most streamed album till date, while playlists curated by experts were popular than albums with about 33 per cent more clicks.

The maximum usage of the application was recorded between 9 a.m. and 12 noon, a time when most users were on their way to work.

Wynk has a high definition catalogue of over 1.8 million Indian and international songs, while songs of Ungli  a film starring Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut, were first available on Wynk.

Airtel is the first operator in the country to introduce an OTT (Over-the-Top) mobile application, which works across mobile operators, enabling customers to stream, download in an ad-free interface.

The move comes even as telecom companies are losing out to players such as Facebook and Google when it comes to earning money from mobile services. Airtel’s launch is being seen as an attempt to eat into the revenue share of the application service providers.

Until now, Indian telecom players were happy milking the low-hanging fruit of voice telephony.

But with data being the new growth area it’s important for operators to move beyond providing just telecom pipes to offering applications.
