Job hunters be warned. Fake call/offer letters from IT companies confirming your appointment seem to be doing the rounds. Don’t be carried away by such mails and remit sums as demanded by the so-called signatory to the mail.

Industry sources confirm that such fake offer/call letters is a menace across the IT industry and the companies are doing their best to sensitise job applicants from falling a prey to such invitations.

Yet, there are a few here and there, who commit the mistake of remitting the money.

On such incident happened here today. The candidate received a text message informing her of an interview, the details of which could be downloaded from a link mentioned in the text.

The candidate dutifully downloaded the copy of the letter from the link (which is available with Business Line ), which said that the appointment process would be at the company office on September 26.

Further, towards interview management, the candidate was asked to deposit ‘an initial refundable security amount in favour of the company for Rs 2250.’

‘After receiving the confirmation of the security deposited with the bank, your call letter and air ticket will be dispensed by courier,’ the letter said. The candidate, who was desperately looking for a job and had uploaded her resume at different job portals, thought that she had indeed received the communication from this renowned IT company.

She dutifully called up the person, whose contact number was mentioned in the mail, got the bank account details and remitted the amount.

Only later did she realise that she was one of those gullible victims to this fake mail.

When this correspondent called the bank to understand the kind of remittances made to this account, the banker said that the balance was nil as the account holder had withdrawn the sums through the ATM.

Company sources maintained that the menace was across the IT industry.

Asked if the company had preferred to lodge a complaint with the police, the source said ‘we sensitise the candidate. It is up to the candidate to report the same to the police.’

Meanwhile, fraudsters seem to be busy, eyeing the next catch…
