Dell EMC announced the global launch of its 14th generation PowerEdge server portfolio on Wednesday nearly three years after the launch of its 13th Generation PowerEdge server portfolio.

The India R&D team stands tall, contributing 60 per cent to overall server systems management software with the grounds up engineering of the 14th generation servers touching three key tenets of scalability, intelligent automation and integrated security.

“Right from the 6th generation of PowerEdge servers way back in 2001 till the 14th generation PowerEdge servers, the collaboration and innovation of technologists in Bengaluru with R&D teams across the globe has significantly risen from a few programmes involving a few aspects to over 25 programmes involving all aspects of the server today,” Rudramuni B, Vice-President & Centre Head, Dell EMC, Bangalore Design Centre, told

BusinessLine . The engagement for the 14th generation servers started in 2014 with over 1,000 technologists/development/validation teams with the Bengaluru team delivering 26 Firmware and Software releases, 3 solution reference architectures and certifications, 9 operating system certifications and numerous documents and technical collateral. The maturity of the Bengaluru centre has grown in stature with full ownership and accountability with the team now in a position to influence product roadmaps for server software products that are a part of the 14th Generation servers.

Innovations & learnings

“To ensure a smooth rollout of the 14th Generation servers, a number of process innovations and new learnings had to be implemented, ranging from hardware material re-work to the software development processes; many of these have now become the best practices” said Rudramuni. The India R&D team has filed over 400 patents to date.

Some of the key differentiators of the 14th Generation servers are that it offers IT administrators 145 fewer steps and 67 per cent time savings to set up servers, supports up to 50 per cent more virtual desktop users per server, reduces spend up to 56 per cent on cooling energy costs for data centre infrastructure, offers 90 per cent server issue resolution with proactive and predictive technology, up to 4X more performance and 250 per cent more bandwidth, said Manish Gupta, Senior Director & General Manager, Compute & Networking Group, Dell EMC India.

With digital transformation becoming a priority for CEOs, data centres need to deliver a modern infrastructure that adapts and scales with business needs. The 14th Generation PowerEdge Servers are aimed at driving IT transformation in the industry, said Rajesh Janey, President & Managing Director, India Enterprise, Dell EMC.
