Digital commerce market may touch Rs 62,967 cr by year-end: Report

Total digital commerce market in India is expected to touch Rs 62,967 crore by the end of this year, growing by 33 per cent from Rs 47,349 crore in December 2012.

According to Digital Commerce Report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the online travel industry has grown the most in the last three years.

The online travel industry grew 32 per cent on an average from Rs 14,953 crore in 2009 to Rs 34,544 crore in 2012 and is estimated to grow by another 30 per cent to Rs 44,907 crore by December.

The report said that online travel, which includes booking rail, air, bus tickets, hotel accommodations and tour packages, comprised a majority 71 per cent of the whole digital commerce pie in 2012.

E-tailing, which includes purchases of various consumer products and services such as electronics, apparels, footwear, jewellery, home and kitchen appliances and furnishings, constituted 16 per cent of the overall share (Rs 6,454 crore in 2012).

The category has grown from Rs 1,550 crore in 2009 and is estimated to grow by 55 per cent to cross Rs 10,000 crore by 2013-end.

Financial services that include services such as paying insurance premiums and renewals, paying utility and mobile bills amounted to 6 per cent of the overall share (Rs 2,886 crore), the report said.

It is expected to grow by 25 per cent and touch Rs 3,607 crore by the end of this calendar year.

According to the report, classifieds market has also seen growth and reached Rs 2,354 crore in 2012.

Classifieds as a category has grown with a compounded annual growth rate of 45 per cent from 2009 and is expected to grow by another 30 per cent to Rs 3,061 crore this year.
