Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology is considering an option to set up a manufacturing facility at JN Port’s (Maharashtra) Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said here.

He was speaking at a conference to announce a skill-based development tie-up with the rural development ministry in coastal regions.

Gadkari said that he got a call from the Maharashtra Chief Minister, while he was in London, seeking 13-14 acres in JN Port’s SEZ. JN Port is coming up with an SEZ in its port land, in a move to promote manufacturing and port led development. There is lot of demand for the SEZ, said Gadkari.

Land will have to be handed over through leases, said an official.

Foxconn is the global leading phone manufacturing company, which manufacturers smartphones of companies such as Apple, BlackBerry, Motorola and Xiaomi, and has been focussing in India ever since the new government was formed and get benefits out of ‘Make in India’ programme.

Josh Foulger, Country Head and Managing Director of Foxconn International Holding India, had also in March met Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss support for exporting mobile phones from India.

The company had also tied up with Adani Enterprises to invest $5 billion to set up manufacturing facilities. Its Chairman Terry Gou had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to set up multiple facilities in the State.
