Infosys may hire up to 16,000 from campus next year, Chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy said.

“The fresher hiring process is currently underway…I think we are looking at hiring about 15,000-16,000 next year,” Murthy said in response to a question on its hiring plans.

He was in the city to deliver a lecture to students of the Vivekanand Education Society. However, Murthy did not give an overall hiring target for the next fiscal.

The country’s third largest software exporter has entered into a silent period before its third quarter results that are to be announced in January.

For the current fiscal, the company had publicly stated that it would get on board around 6,000 freshers through the campus recruitment route.

Recently, Infosys’ larger rival Tata Consultancy Services said it planned to hire around 25,000 freshers next fiscal, riding on the back of improved demand for IT services.

Murthy believes that India would be able to create a bigger brand of its IT services industry if it could better the quality of higher education in the country.

“India has started on a good note when it comes to software services. However, if India wants to become a stronger player, we need to improve the quality of engineers that we churn from our institutions every year,” he said.

R&D team Responding to a student’s question about research and development at Infosy, Murthy said the company has a dedicated team of 200 persons, which conduct computer software R&D. The company has also tied up with educational institutions across the world to foster an ecosystem for innovation, he added.
