TCS may hire fewer people this fiscal

Tata Consultancy Services may add fewer employees to its rolls this fiscal vis-à-vis last year.

“We will add 45,000 new staffers (gross) this fiscal. Of this, we have already given offers to nearly 25,000 campus recruits,” said Ajoy Mukherjee, Executive Vice-President, Head, Global Human Resources.

The Tata group company may alter its hiring plans, depending on the business environment, during the course of the year.

During 2012-13, the company trained and integrated over 69,000 professionals, he said.

For 2013-14, the company will hire a mix of freshers and experienced hands, Mukherjee said, without giving a precise break-up.

Wage hikes

The company will provide average wage hikes of seven per cent this fiscal, said Mukherjee. Of this, India-based staffers are to get hikes in the 5-10 per cent range, and those in the developed markets, a 2-4 per cent rise.

Employees in developing countries would get a 4-6 per cent rise. The wage hikes would be provided starting this month, he said.

US Immigration

TCS generates more than half of its revenues from clients in the United States. A draft US immigration law aims to limit the number of workers that companies can send to the US, a move which is likely to drastically push up the company’s operating costs.

“We will wait till the full version is out, study it and then release our observations,” said TCS Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director N. Chandrasekaran.

A third of the 65,000 H-1B visas currently granted each year are sponsored by Indian IT firms such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro.

Attrition

On the human resources front, utilisation (staffers on projects) excluding trainees stood at 82 per cent, while utilisation including trainees was at 72.2 per cent.

The overall attrition rate was lower at 10.57 per cent; while attrition in the IT business and BPO units stood at 9.4 per cent and 19.5 per cent, respectively.
