Vodafone on Tuesday launched its 4G mobile network. It chose Kochi as the launching pad for the national roll-out.

Sunil Sood, Managing Director and CEO, Vodafone India, said: “Kerala is a significant market with more than 80 per cent growth in data-savvy customers than the national average.”

Besides Kerala, the 4G network will be launched in Karnataka, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata by the end of March in the first phase, he told

BusinessLine on the sidelines of the event. “We are in the process of upgrading the network from 2G to the new 3G and 4G in all these circles,” he added.

Referring to the advantages of 4G services, he said the ultrafast speed offered on the network will enable customers to access internet via mobile with speeds across a range of smart devices including mobile Wi-Fi.

Investments planned The company has entered into tie-ups with both high end and mid end smart phone manufacturers for enabling 4G handsets.

Sood said the company has lined up investments to the tune of ₹13,000 crore in India for various government initiatives. Of this, ₹1000 crore will be earmarked exclusively for setting up Tier IV data centres in the outskirts of Mumbai and ₹3,000 crore for engaging 15,000 people to make high-end products for Vodafone network.

On average revenue per unit (ARPU), he said it has been continuously dropping for more than 10 years. But it is not dropping anymore because of the growth in data usage.
