Sensex ends flat; Bank, auto stocks major gainers

The Sensex and the Nifty ended the session flat on Monday amid firm European cues.

The 30-share BSE index Sensex was up 9.27 points (0.05 per cent) at 20,159.12 and the 50-share NSE index Nifty was up 2.6 points (0.04 per cent) at 6,031.80.

Among BSE sectoral indices, auto and banking indices gained the most and were up 1.06 per cent and 0.98 per cent, respectively, followed by IT 0.73 per cent and TECk 0.71 per cent.

On the other hand, capital goods index succumbed to heavy selling pressure and was down 5.57 per cent, followed by oil & gas 1.65 per cent, power 0.91 per cent and PSU 0.62 per cent.

Among 30-share Sensex, HDFC, Sun Pharma, M&M, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank were the top five gainers, while the top five losers were L&T, BHEL, Tata Steel, ONGC and Dr Reddy's.

European and Asian stocks were up on rising corporate profits and speculation that the US housing data will show faster growth.

In the European market, Stoxx 50 was up 12.51 points or 0.46 per cent at 2,728.68,FTSE 100 was down 3.07 points or 0.05 per cent at 6,627.60 and DAX was up 24.18 points or 0.29 per cent at 8,355.75.

In the Asian trade, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 68.13 points or 0.47 per cent to 14,658.04 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 54.08 points or 0.25 per cent at 21,416.50.
