Coffee exports up 2% in August

India’s coffee exports rose marginally, just two per cent year-on-year, to 23,146 tonnes last month, according to the Coffee Board data. The country had exported 22,642 tonnes of the brew in August 2010.

The country earned $69.24 million in foreign currency from exports during last month, which in rupee terms stood at Rs 313.30 crore, the data showed. The value realisation of coffee last month stood at Rs 1.35 lakh per tonne.

However, the shipments have come down by 18 per cent in August compared with previous month, when export stood at 28,116 tonnes.

During the April-August period of the current fiscal, export have risen 29 per cent to 1.68 lakh tonnes, as against 1.30 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

In the coffee year 2010-11, the exports rose by 36 per cent to 3.34 lakh tonnes between October 2010 and August 2011, from 2.45 lakh tonnes in the same period of the previous year. Coffee year runs from October to September.

India largely exports coffee to Italy, Germany, Russia, Belgium and Spain.
