The rupee was trading weak by 12 paise at 67.48 in the evening session on sustained dollar demand from importers, foreign fund outflows and on the back of dollar's strength overseas.

The dollar held at its highest in nearly two months against a basket of major currencies, on track for a third week of gains as investors awaken to the risk of a hike in US interest rates as early as next month.

The dollar index last stood at 95.289, having been as high as 95.502 overnight - a level last seen on March 29. It was up nearly 0.8 per cent this week and has risen 2.4 per cent in the past three weeks.

The rupee opened 2 paise weak at 67.38 against the previous close of 67.36, down for the seventh straight session.

It hovered in a range of 67.50 and 67.31 before quoting at 67.48 at 4.35 pm local time.

Meanwhile, the 30-share BSE index Sensex ended lower by 97.82 points or 0.39 per cent at 25,301.90 tracking weak global markets as caution prevailed about the possibility of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve as early as June.
