A major fire gutted nearly 150 slums at Ultadanga, located in the North-Eastern fringe of Kolkata this morning.

According to the State fire and emergency services officials, the fire broke at around 5 a.m. at Basanti slum area at Ultadanga.

Twenty fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control in three hours, they said.

While properties and belongings of the slum dwellers have been damaged, no casualties have been reported in the incident.

Local political leaders said the slums were prone to fire accidents and pukka houses should be built for them to avoid such incidents in the future.
