National Institute of Technology, Silchar, would soon start work on producing electricity from kitchen waste with the help of scientists from Bhaba Atomic Research Centre.
“We will start work within a month with the assistance of BARC scientists and NIT would have a solar powered campus soon,” Director NIT, Silchar N V Deshpande said today.
NIT has also adopted two neighbouring villages — Madhutilla and Babutilla — as part of its social responsibility programme.
“We have to think about the poor and uneducated people residing near the institute. It is our responsibility to help them,” Deshpande said.
“We are providing technical teachings including funds to them. Around 250 school dropouts of two villages are pursuing the course and those who have completed it are now engaged in different development works in NIT,” he said.
They are given training in various trades like that of plumbing, electrician, masonry and the institute was also imparting computer education to the villagers, he said.
Around 150 students of the institute have taken classes in Mathematics, English, Computers and other subjects in the villages.
NIT Silchar will open a few more professional courses, including architecture, manufacturing and materials, he said, adding that a high-tech machine for soil testing would also be installed on campus.
