Information Technology and ITeS, healthcare, automobiles, and construction are the sectors in which the majority were trained for skilling and upskilling in 2018-19 under fee-based training, according to the data released by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
“There is demand for upskilling and skilling of freshers in healthcare, IT, automobiles and the sector skill councils which are experts in sector knowledge in collaboration with their training partners come up with courses in which they see a rise in demand,” said Navanit Samaiyar, CEO, Association of Skill Training Providers (ASTP).
With the launch of the programmes by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship such as Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Udaan, and Sankalp, industry experts are of the view that such programmes have brought structure to the unorganised segment.
“Now there is a curriculum designed for beauticians, textile workers, and food delivery employees. Also, the curriculum is in sync with the industry demand and now such workforce also comes up with certain level of skilling,” said Samaiyar.
According to industry experts, there is demand for skilling in sectors such as retail, textile and garments, logistics, and banking financial services and insurance (BFSI).
“Demand for skill training varies both sector-wise and geographically. However, there has been buoyant demand for skilled workers across sectors, especially hospitality, tourism, banking, construction,” a government source said.
Meanwhile, the biggest challenge is to meet the requirement of the industry which at times does not match the aspirations of youth. To fix the issue, MSDE is identifying skills which are in line with the requirements of the Industry 4.0 and also those which are sought after by the youth.
