Manipal University students have launched Formula Manipal 2013 car. The car, which was designed and assembled by the students of Manipal Institute of Technology, will participate in two competitions — Formula Student Germany 2013 and Formula Student Czech Republic 2013.

A press release by the university said here that the events would be held at Hockenheimring in Germany from July 30 to August 4, and in Czech Republic from August 8 to 11.

Formula Manipal is a team of 25 interdisciplinary undergraduate students of Manipal University. The team conceptualised, designed, fabricated, manufactured and tested a single seater, open-wheel formula style race car. The team participates in events hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at various places in the world.

The team has already completed 200 km of testing of Formula Manipal 2013. The team will be testing the car for a week in Austria to improve its performance at the international competitions, the release said.

Formula Manipal cars participated in competitions in Italy (2008 and 2011), the UK (2009) and Austria (2010).

SAE organises the competition — Formula SAE (FSAE) — for students. The challenge for the students is to design and manufacture a formula-style race car with specific design and safety considerations according to the guidelines laid down by FSAE. The different cars competing at the event are evaluated on quality of design and performance. The competitions are held in 10 different zones around the globe.

More than 2000 engineering students participate from over 23 countries to showcase their technical expertise, the release said.
