The low-pressure area over East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining South-East Bay of Bengal has undergone a first round of intensification into being ‘well-marked.’
An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said that it is very likely to intensify into a depression by Friday over the East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal.
The IMD bulletin issued on Thursday said the depression would intensify quickly into a cyclonic storm by Saturday over the South-West Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean.
The cyclone will move in a typical North-West direction along and off the east coast of Sri Lanka towards the North Tamil Nadu coast on Tuesday.
Weather warnings issued by the IMD for the next four days are as follows:
Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry : Light to moderate rainfall at many places on Sunday; rainfall at most places with heavy falls at isolated places on Monday; and rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places on Tuesday; and rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy at isolated places on Wednesday.
Kerala : Light to moderate rainfall at many places on Sunday; rainfall at most places with heavy falls at isolated places on Monday; rainfall at most places with heavy falls at isolated places on Tuesday; and rainfall at a few places on Wednesday.
South Coastal Andhra Pradesh : Rainfall at isolated places on Sunday; rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places on Monday; rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places on Tuesday; and rainfall at a few places on Wednesday.
High winds warning
Squally winds with speed reaching up to 45 km/hr and gusting to 55 km/hr likely over East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining South-East Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
The wind speeds would gradually increase reaching up to 55 km/hr in speed and gusting to 65 km/hr over East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of the South Bay of Bengal on Friday.
The wind speeds would pick up further reaching up to 90 km/hr gusting to 100 km/hr over the South-West Bay and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean and along and off Sri Lanka coast on Sunday.
They would hit the expected top range of 90 to 100 km/hr and gusting to 115 km/hr (severe cyclone) over along and off Sri Lanka coast and and off Tamilnadu and Puducherry from Tuesday noon.
As for Kerala, strong winds with speed reaching up to 40 km/hr and gusting to 50 km/hr may commence from Sunday morning becoming squally with speeds of 50 km/hr and gusting to 60 km/hr from Monday morning.
Adverse sea condition
The sea condition would be ‘rough’ (wave heights of up to eight ft) over East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining South-East Bay on Thursday and over East Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of the South Bay on Friday.
It would be ‘rough’ to ‘very rough’ (wave heights of up to 20 ft) over the South-West Bay adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean on Saturday; ‘very rough’ to ‘high’ over the South-West Bay and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean and along and off Sri Lanka on Sunday; ‘high’ to ‘very high’ (wave heights of up to 30 ft) over the South-West Bay along and off Sri Lanka, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coasts on Monday and Tuesday.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the deep sea.
