40% people have no bank account, says minister

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna will lead to welfare of people from economically weaker sections of society, according to Tavarchand Gehlot, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment.

Speaking at the launch of the Jan Dhan scheme in Mangalore on Thursday, he said nearly 40 per cent of people in the country do not have bank accounts. The Jan Dhan scheme will instil self-respect in the poor, who otherwise could not have had banking facilities, he said. Nalin Kumar Kateel, Dakshina Kannada MP, said that around 50,000 people were being enrolled under this programme in the district on Thursday.

Banking opportunity

BK Srivastav, Executive Director of Corporation Bank, who welcomed the gathering, said the Jan Dhan scheme would be an everyday programme for bankers to provide facilities to more people in the country.

Ramanatha Rai, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district, said the nationalisation of banks in 1969 had helped bring more people under the banking network.
